Patriots Mug

New England, Patriots, New England Patriots, Patriots Fans, Football, Superbowl

I have a friend who is a die hard New England Patriots fan and even though they did not win the Super Bowl 2026, I wanted to make something for her to honor her loyalty to her team.  I found this white coffee mug and thought it would look good with a Patriots logo on it.

Instead of looking for an SVG file for my Silhouette cutting machine, I decided to cut a stencil the old fashioned way, with an Xacto knife.

I did a Google search for free Patriots Logo images and found one that I liked, downloaded it into my computer and inserted it into a Word document.

I printed out the design in color and in black & white in the size I needed to go around the mug.

Next step is to lay strips of Blue Painters Tape onto a plastic bag, cut out around the Patriots pattern and then tape the pattern onto the Blue tape using rolled up scotch tape underneath.  Now, using your Xacto knife, cut out around the pattern, through the Blue tape and the plastic bag.   The pattern piece can then be placed on the mug where you want the lettering to go using scotch tape rolls again.  It will also help you to place the remaining Blue tape Transfer onto the mug.  Once you have the Blue tape Transfer placed, remove the Patriots Pattern and burnish the edges of your Transfer.

Make sure the transfer is securely attached and then add some extra blue painters tape around the design in case you get the Etchall Cream where you don’t want it.

Make sure that the round mug will not roll from its laying down position, then apply the Etchall etching cream and set your timer for 15 minutes.

After 15 minutes use the black plastic squeegee and scrape off the etching cream and put it back in the jar.  (YES, you can reuse this cream over and over, Even if the color has turned from white to Chocolate!)   Then, remove the outer stencil and wipe the glass off with an unscented baby wipe, polish it with a paper towel and wash any remaining Etchall cream off the surface.

The Etchall Cream takes the glaze off of the mug and gives it some ‘tooth’ so you can apply color.

For the lettering, tape the words to the Mug, slide a small piece of carbon paper under the wording (you can also use transfer paper), and trace over the letters with a ball point pen. Once the pattern is removed, outline it with your Identipen so you can see it better.   My outlining and coloring tools are Sakura Identipens. Sakura is the only pen I have found that does not spread when it is sprayed with clear coat. But you can use any pen that is permanent or indelible.  Now fill in the letters with a Blue pen and color in the Patriots Logo as it looks in the photo.

After coloring and lettering the design, set the mug aside for about a half hour to make sure the pen ink is completely dry. Attach some Blue tape to the area above the design, about 1/2″ down from the lip of the Mug.  (You don’t want to put your lips on the painted surface when you drink from the mug.)  Spray the design lightly with Krylon Fusion, Clear Finish, Gloss paint, let it dry for 5 minutes and spray it lightly again.  Remove the Blue tape paint shield and Voila!  You have a beautiful Patriots mug.

You can make mugs with other teams Logos using this technique.  They make great gifts for football, baseball, hockey, etc. fans.  Have fun with it!

Remember to always use Etchall etching cream in your projects. It was voted the BEST
