Etched Dessert Plate
by Kathie Camara
I found a boring 8″ diameter clear glass dessert plate at my local thrift store and thought, “this would be a great surface to enhance with an etched design”. Â I looked online and found a cute cupcake SVG, which would work for an etched dessert plate, as it is a small plate. Â I determined that I needed the cupcakes to be about 2 – 2 1/2″ and I would put 4 of them on the plate.

I cut out 4 images of the cupcake to use on the plate and prepared them for use by weeding them, putting sticky tape on them and set them aside. Â I measured 1/2″ from the edge of the plate and marked it with masking tape so I knew where to place my cupcake. Â I measured and made sure the 4 images would be centered on the plate, and continued taping. Â Then I cut the top of the yellow vinyl so I could remove the sticky backing and place the image correctly (1/2″ from the top). Â Once placed, I made sure to burnish them down securely.
I then taped around the images so the Etching cream wouldn’t run. Â Because I am a little messy, I taped over all the surfaces that I did not want a speck of etching cream to
touch the glass. Â Only the design needs to be etched.
It is a lot of tape, but I have found that it pays to prevent the etching cream from sneaking under the vinyl or the tape. Â Better safe than sorry.

Now it is ready for the Etching cream. Â I spooned out some of my Etchall cream onto each cupcake image.
It is nice and thick and formed a puddle over the images.

The timer was set for 15 minutes to allow the Etchall to do it’s magic.
Since I’ve had my Etchall for a long time, the color has turned to a dark chocolate pudding color. Â BUT, it still works just fine. Â Â It lasts a long time.
After 15 minutes, I scraped the Etchall cream back into the jar. Â (Yes it does work over and over). Â I wiped off the excess cream with paper towels, then rinsed in the sink into a basin to be thrown outside. Â (Don’t rinse in your sink without a basin, as the etching cream can etch your porcelain sink).

I removed all of the tape and the vinyl images and rinsed and dried the plate. Â The images were etched nicely.
I did not have any cupcakes, but I did have some Macarons to put on my newly decorated etched dessert plate. Â Â (See image above.)
This would make a great hostess gift. Â Bring the dessert and leave the dessert dish.
